Circuit Building with CSA Catapult

On Wednesday 10th February, you’re invited to join David Ansah and Iestyn Llyr, Embedded Software Engineers at CSA Catapult, to build your own lightbulb circuit, learn about the flow of electricity, where is the best place for the battery and how to measure voltage. We’ve also got a puzzle for parents: they will be challenged to calculate your circuit’s current.

David and Iestyn will reveal how their roles involve discovering what compound semiconductors can do and how they will transform future technology, in the applications we use every day. They will be joined by our HR Director, Clare Gunning who will introduce CSA Catapult’s STEM activities – these aim to help young people discover routes into engineering and tech.

We believe this activity is best suited to children up to age 12. If you’re looking for an interesting and educational activity to keep your young ones busy in lockdown – this event is for you! We look forward to seeing you there.

Agenda:

14:00 – Hello, welcome

14:10 – Build your own circuit and the flow of electricity – conductors and insulators

14:30 – 5-minute break for snacks

14:35 – Where is the best place for the battery and switch? How to measure voltage

14:55 – Parents’ puzzle: calculate the circuit current

15:05 – CSA Catapult’s STEM Activities

15:10 – Event close

Event Details:

  • Please email events@csa.catapult.org.uk and let us know the name and age of the child/children attending. Once you have registered, we will send you a link to join the Teams meeting.
  • During the event, you’ll need to join the Teams meeting and have the circuit programme open, ideally on a second screen, or a separate tab.
  • Parents/responsible adults please click here to view the programme we’ll be using to build the circuits. On the day, please select the ‘Lab’ option.
  • You’ll need a computer mouse and keyboard to complete the activities.
  • We want to hear your questions so please feel free to keep your mic off mute.
  • During the break please keep the meeting open and your circuits intact.

Please note: this event will be recorded for the Cardiff Science Festival (18th – 21st February). We’d love to see you on camera and say hello before we start the session, but this is not compulsory. Be sure to tell your friends and colleagues that the event will be repeated as part of the festival, if they cannot make this time. After the event, the session will be uploaded to CSA Catapult’s Resources on our website.
