Helping our customers secure public and private investment

Catapults have a significant role in supporting start-ups, SMEs and larger companies to leverage private and public investment in R&D. All Catapults are required to track R&D investment.

Our analysis of the impact that working with CSA Catapult has on SMEs’ attraction of private and public sector funding, compared to a counterfactual group of SMEs we have not worked with.

What our customers say:

In 2025, we surveyed our customers to understand our impact in the year 2024-25, with the following key findings:

  • 97% said they would work with CSA Catapult again
  • 71% said they would have faced delays, higher costs or been unable to progress without Catapult support.
  • 80% secured public funding; over half (56%) attribute this directly to Catapult engagement.
  • 74% developed new partnerships.
  • 56% targeting new markets.
  • 55% strengthened international links.
  • 36% attracted greater investment.
  • 57% now have confidence to take products to market.
  • Recruitment needs: Significant demand for technical roles, especially in photonics and semiconductor engineering.
  • Overall impact: The survey demonstrates evidence to show how CSA Catapult plays a critical role in helping SMEs and larger organisations innovate faster, secure funding, build partnerships, and overcome the “valley of death” in technology development.

Growing the UK industry

We support a wide range of companies across the UK from our locations in Newport (South Wales), Bristol, the North East and Scotland.

To date, we have delivered 140 projects working with industry and academia across the UK.

Building UK supply chains

We have an impressive track record in building and strengthening compound semiconductor supply chains.

In our first five years we participated in significant power electronics projects, such as @FutureBEV and ESCAPE, where we played an instrumental role in developing new end-to-end supply chains.

Overall, our collaborative projects have developed talent and skills across supply chains, and led to scale-up for around 20% of companies we have worked with.

Developing skills for the future

Our Skills Academy is building the compound semiconductor workforce of the future.  

We work with both industry and academia to plan for the demand for skills in compound semiconductors. We work with schools, colleges, and higher and further education providers to raise awareness of the opportunities for young people. The opportunities are significant: market analysis suggests that the industry’s aggregate annual growth rate could average from 6–8% a year up to 2030. 

We work with the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF), CSconnected, Innovate UK, Driving the Electric Revolution and the Gatsby Foundation to deliver our skills programmes.
