What is it?  

The 5G Keysight test set-up is used to measure power amplifiers and other RF and microwave communications components. 

Supported by software, the set-up generates and analyses signals. This combination enables signal analysis and system integration for evaluating and developing next-generation communication technologies.  

What does the 5G Keysight setup do? 

It uses real 5G test signals so our team can create tests and measure the results for different components and signals. 

The set-up verifies and validates hardware for 5G, 6G and other future telecoms application requirements, such as wireless communications.

Who is it for? 

Similar to other lab equipment at CSA Catapult, the 5G Keysight set-up is used for internal projects for the Catapult’s own R&D to build our expertise, as well as in collaborative R&D projects with external partners. 

It is also available for customers across the UK to use – how they use the set-up will depend on their technology readiness level (TRL) and the components they want to develop.  

The 5G Keysight set-up was deliberately chosen to offer customers flexibility. It covers a wide range of frequencies from very low to up to 110 gigahertz. This range can accommodate many applications from 5G, satellite communications and defence through to applications that need broadband signals and specific multiport test set-ups.  

A component or device might need initial prototype testing or final verifications using test signals to simulate real-world situations. The set-up can be used to understand how the technology will perform, for example in front-end RF communication systems or when combining system with software to optimise capabilities. 

How is this piece of equipment unique?

Since CSA Catapult was established, it has developed design, modelling, characterisation and validation for RF and microwave communications through testing at chip and device level. 

The 5G Keysight set-up enables the team to keep developing capabilities and expertise ahead of emerging RF and microwave technology trends. Customers are moving forward with products at higher TRLs that meet industry demand now, or that will be needed in the future. 

There is now a desire to get closer to system level applications and demonstrate products in system scenarios which can be prototyped and scaled up to higher numbers. 

Using the set-up, CSA Catapult can now test and validate components at stages that are closer to the application. This capability speeds up the development process and we can help customers operating at higher TRLs.
