Supporting the next generation of STEM leaders in the UK and Malaysia

A project set-up to support STEM education in Malaysia, jointly organised by Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult, has been launched this week.  

The UK-Malaysia STEM Education Showcase will promote interest in STEM subjects and careers among school children in Malaysia. 

The project is being organised by the British High Commision in partnership with CSA Catapult, National STEM Learning Centre UK, Universiti Malaya STEM Centre, and is supported by the Ministry of Education.

The Showcase involves a Train-the-Trainer programme to support 122 student ambassadors at universities across Malaysia, a primary school tour with a mobile STEM lab, and a high-level STEM policy roundtable. 

The policy roundtable brought together various government agencies, industry and academics to address ways in which schools and industry can work more closely together to help bridge the skills gap, and tie education and employment more closely together. 

They also discussed methods of enhancing STEM education and innovative ways of more effectively engaging young learners within schools.

The project in Malysia is a demonstration of CSA Catapult’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and part of its mission to inspire and develop the next generation of scientists and engineers.  

Over the next 2 weeks, the interactive STEM mobile lab will tour 8 primary schools across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to engage school children and offer the opportunity to get hands-on with semiconductor technology, as well as robotics and artificial intelligence. 

The UK-Malaysia STEM Education Showcase is open to the public until 17th January 2025 at the SemiCon City, Tech Dome Penang.
