Compound semiconductors are key to the mitigation of climate change and bringing about a Net Zero economy. 

In renewable energy generation, compound semiconductor-based solar panels are more energy efficient than traditional silicon-based counterparts. Compound semiconductors reduce energy losses and deliver more energy to the end user. 

Materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) improve the efficiency of power electronics, energy storage systems, and electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains. This is having a transformational impact on the EV industry. 

Compound semiconductors are making vehicles lighter, more efficient and capable of travelling longer distances, whilst at the same time drastically reducing charging times.  

Compound semiconductors are alleviating the huge amounts of energy consumed by data centres, and are also being used in smart grids, energy-efficient lighting and energy storage systems.
