CSA Catapult Welcomes New Centre Lead for Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre

Date: 30.11.2021

Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult and the central Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centres (DER-IC) are pleased to welcome Paul Jarvie as Centre Lead for DER-IC – South West and Wales.

Paul brings with him wide-ranging experience in electronics gained from well-known organisations such as NEC Semiconductors, NXP Semiconductors, TechWorks and AESIN. Paul joined TechWorks in 2005 and led the Electronic Product Design/Test and Power Electronics Networks for over seven years. Paul became director of AESIN (Automotive Electronics Systems Innovation Network) in 2015, engaging the full automotive electronics supply chain while co-chairing SEMI GAAC (Global Automotive Advisory Council) with Volkswagen. Paul has a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of the West of Scotland.

DER-IC – South West and Wales is one of four regional centres located around the UK. Each centre provides high-level expertise and the latest equipment in the critical elements of PEMD supply chain required for electrification across multiple sectors such as Aerospace, Marine and Automotive. DER-IC – South West and Wales focuses on developing supply chain capability and competence for the underpinning of power electronics components and materials, towards UK net zero goals.

The centre is hosted by CSA Catapult and draws on the Catapult’s expertise in compound semiconductor technologies and applications particularly from its proven track record in power electronics and advanced packaging and its state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories.

DER-IC Chair, Professor Matt Boyle OBE said:

Paul is a great addition to our team and the leadership of the DER Industrial Centre at the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult. His experience at AESIN and his international network are a great asset to the DER Challenge. Paul was a great contributor to the development of the challenge and welcome his arrival in Wales.”

CSA Catapult’s Chief Commercial Officer, Amar Abid-Ali, said:

We are delighted to welcome Paul as the DER-IC Centre Lead for South West and Wales. With Paul’s vast experience and knowledge of the automotive and electronics industries and with the collaboration of our partners, I am confident that this centre will accelerate the adoption and the manufacturing processes of the advanced materials and components required for the vast range of PEMD applications, as well as significantly strengthen the UK supply chain and attract international interest and investment into the UK.”

Centre Lead for DER-IC – South West and Wales, Paul Jarvie said:

I am excited to be working with a great team at the centre of such a big topic for government and society alike with direct future benefits to the world. The Catapult has an amazing team, superb facilities, and a collaborative innovation culture. This centre also has links across the DER-IC network giving UK-wide access to leverage wider capability and scaling up PEMD supply chain at the core of the Electric Revolution.”

About CSA Catapult

Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult is focused on bringing compound semiconductor applications to life in three key areas: the road to Net Zero, future telecoms and intelligent sensing.

CSA Catapult is a Not for Profit organisation headquartered in South Wales.  It is focused on three technology areas: Power Electronics, RF & Microwave and Photonics.  As well as the three technology areas, CSA Catapult is also working in Advanced Packaging for these high-power innovations.

The next wave of emerging applications will have an enormous impact on our lives. Compound semiconductors will enable a host of new and exciting applications in the electrification of transport, clean energy, defence and security and digital communications markets.

CSA Catapult exists to help the UK compound semiconductor industry grow and collaborates across the UK and internationally.

About Compound Semiconductors

Semiconductors are at the heart of almost all modern electronic devices. Silicon semiconductors have widespread commercial applications, but this technology has its limits.

Compound semiconductors combine two or more elements to create capabilities that cannot be achieved with conventional silicon devices, delivering performance improvements in power, speed and signal quality.  This makes them ideal to use in areas such as energy efficiency, electrified and autonomous vehicles, mobile applications, new smart-sensing devices for the Internet of Things and 5G applications.

About Catapults

The Catapult network provides world-leading facilities designed to transform the UK’s capability for innovation in specific areas and help drive future economic growth.  Established by Innovate UK, which provides funding and support for business innovation as part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), Catapults provide access to expert technical capabilities, equipment, and other resources required to take innovative ideas from concept to reality. Catapults are a national asset – no matter where the physical HQ is located they are here to work with businesses and academic institutions around the UK.
