Omar Ellabban, Principal Power Electronics Engineer (Team Lead) at CSA Catapult, has recently been awarded his Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Fellowship Status. Omar, who has been at the Catapult since November 2020, now holds the highest level in IET professional membership.
Omar began his engineering career back in 1998 when he studied his BSc in Electric Power and Machines Engineering. He then went on to study a MSc in Electric Power and Machines Engineering and began his PhD in 2011 focused on Power electronics for automotive applications.
Throughout his career, Omar has worked for universities, within industry and as a scientist. Prior to the Catapult he was a R&D director and as part of his role focused on innovation and renewable energy integration and various smart grid demonstration activities.
At the Catapult Omar is a Principal Power Electronics Engineer as well as being the team lead for the Power Electronics department. As part of his role, Omar works closely with the Head of Power Electronics, Ingo Ludtke, and is involved in leading various technical projects, creating and drafting new bids, participating in creating the future roadmap as well as hiring new engineers to join his team.
As well as achieving his IET Fellowship status, Omar has recently published his second book ‘Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies.’ The book outlines the vision for smart grid technology and applications, the technology that enables it as well as the currently state of the industry and future trends in smart energy. The book also explores themes such as advanced metering infrastructure, net zero energy buildings and communication networks in smart grids.
Omar commented on the news: “I’m delighted with the announcement of being recognised as a fellow by IET. This is a milestone I have been working towards throughout my career and I can finally say I’ve achieved it. As well as this, I’m pleased my book ‘Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies’ has been published and is now available to order.”
