Digital Communications

The challenges in digital communications lie in solving 5G, implementing vehicle to vehicle communication and in satellite communications from ground stations to low earth orbit satellites.

Underpinning Technologies

Compound semiconductors are currently being deployed across a rapidly growing number of digital applications and here at CSA Catapult we are the forefront of these developments.

  • Extension of 802.11 (IEEE 802.11p) to include wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE)
    • Based on EU standard ETSI ITS-G5
  • Cellular V2X (C-V2X)
    • C-V2X is an alternative to 802.11p, the IEEE specified standard for V2V and other forms of V2X communications. Pre-commercial C-V2X deployments have recently gained considerable momentum with support from industry
  • 5G/mmWave
    • Next generation of wireless technology for digital communications
  • Gigabit LTE
    • Long Term Evolution standard with maximum peak download speeds in excess of 1Gbit/s
  • High-Resolution RADAR
  • LIDAR
    • Distance measurements by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflected light with a sensor

What We Offer

Our Evaluation Modules provide a design blueprint and device evaluation platform for developers of 5G phased arrays, thermal management systems for GaN transistors. These evaluation modules quickly enable you to evaluate a complete UK-based supply chain within one technology demonstrator, allowing quick proof of concept of future applications.

Within CSA catapult we have excellent modelling, and simulation capabilities and we can work directly with you to accelerate your design work.

The RF and Photonics labs have world-leading equipment to enable us to undertake:

• Semi-automatic on-wafer measurements
• High-power connectorized measurements
• High-power pulsed IV testing
• S-parameter testing
• Non-linear characterisation and load pull at up to 40GHz
• Wideband generation and analysis at up to 40GHz
