Examining the case for being a global leader in telecoms vendor diversification with CSA Catapult.

This joint techUK and CSA Catapult event will explore the economic benefits that diversification of telecoms can bring to the UK, particularly if the UK is able to move swiftly in shaping and adopting new disaggregated networks under technology like Open RAN.

The new opportunities that technology approaches like Open RAN can bring include giving fresh impetus to the UK’s Compound Semiconductor companies, expanded opportunities for UK specialisms in radio or network monitoring. By supercharging our ability to move towards disaggregated networks and also build the knowledge and expertise that is required to knit together different vendors.

The Government’s recent decision to remove Huawei from the UK’s 5G networks by 2027 was accompanied by the announcement of a three-pronged approach to diversification. This is to ensure that the UK is not left depending solely on the other two major telecoms vendors – Ericsson and Nokia – who can provide products from 2G to 5G. The Government has since announced the creation of Diversification Taskforce to formulate an actionable strategy.

The disaggregation of networks – a trend of which Open RAN is a part of – will be a key element of that strategy. This event will explore the scale of the economic prize for UK-based companies and what is needed to supercharge our supplier base.

Key topics that will be covered during the event:

  • The components required to open up our telecoms market
  • The existing UK strengths and clusters in the telecoms supply chain
  • What is required – from R&D funding, more mature standards to demand side changes – to enhance the UK’s telecoms supplier base.

Strategic Development Director at CSA Catapult, Andy Sellars, will be chairing this event with techUK.
